If you are expecting a baby, you have probably started looking into furniture for your nursery. One of the most popular pieces of furniture, aside from the crib, is some form of rocking chair. Rocking chairs usually come in two major types, nursery gliders and traditional rockers. Both chairs have some desirable features and drawbacks.

The first difference between the two that most people will notice is the price. Nursery gliders tend to be more complex than a rocking chair and therefore more expensive. It is not uncommon for a glider to be several times more expensive than a basic rocking chair. But as with most things that you buy, the more you pay, the more you get.
A traditional rocker is typically made entirely out of wood. Sitting in one for prolonged periods of time, even with some padding, can be very uncomfortable and bad for your back, hips, and legs. A glider, on the other hand, is comfortably cushioned and ergonomically correct for long periods of sitting with an infant. You may find it to be the most comfortable piece of furniture to comfort your new bundle of joy.
Nursery gliders almost always are accompanied by an ottoman. There is nothing quite like being able to elevate your feet while rocking your newborn to sleep. Ottomans use the same rocking mechanism as the glider, so they rock naturally with the glider. Because of the rocking motion of traditional rocking chairs, footrests are not really feasible and not many types of footrests are available. It would take quite a bit of coordination to rock a traditional rocker and footrest.
The motion of a glider is very smooth and natural. They rock back and forth in a smooth, continuous motion that once started, will continue with only small amounts of force to keep going. You and your baby will get the feeling that you are gliding through the air. Traditional rockers require frequent, forceful movements that can become tiring over time. You may find yourself developing leg muscles with continual use of a traditional rocker while having the feeling of being on a boat in choppy waters.
Because of their construction and design, traditional rocking chairs tend to be noisy. Unless you are rocking on carpet, they make a lot of noise and can damage floors. A glider, particularly one that is well-oiled, will make next to no sound. And anyone who has tried putting a newborn to sleep knows that even the slightest noises can wake the sleeping baby. Furthermore, because no moving parts make contact with the ground, no damage will be incurred to the floor during usage.
To many glider owners, safety is one of their biggest concerns. When pushed too far backwards, a traditional rocker can fall backwards and result in serious injury. Additionally, if you have young children running around, they may get their fingers severely pinched between the rocker and the floor. With a glider, the mounting and mechanisms provide a sturdy base and tipping is difficult. Oftentimes, the mechanism is designed with enough space to limit chances of getting fingers pinched.
Rocking chairs are a must for a baby’s nursery. However, there are two types of rocking chairs, traditional rockers and nursery gliders. Although they both have some advantages and disadvantages, the glider is the obvious choice for your baby nursery room needs. Aside from being more expensive, they are safer, more comfortable, and quieter.
